{NEW SERIES} The Gift of Giving – Home from Home

This is the first installment of a new series – The Gift of Giving. I am very passionate about the welfare of children and women in our community. I wanted to share this passion with others during the festive season as a way of reaching out and touching the lives of others. Every week I will be featuring a group or organisation that uplifts, aids and assists the women and children in our community.

Please choose one group or organisation in your area to assist through donation or volunteer your services. These organisations and groups need our assistance to continue doing the amazing work that they do!

I will be posting a wish list every week. Let’s see how many lives we can touch and change this festive season!

This week’s feature is Home from Home an amazing organisation that focuses on building a better future for children.

Home From Home is a registered Child Protection Organisation and cluster foster care scheme providing supported and supervised community-based foster care for orphaned, abused, neglected and vulnerable children through a network of small family homes in the Western Cape.

Children in foster care have often come from a place of abuse, neglect, poverty, ill health and loss. Home From Home strives to redress these injustices by providing children with security from harm, in loving family homes where they can settle and not be fearful of being uprooted. All of the Home From Home children are given access to food, health care, education and the psychological support that they need to reach their full potential. Our high ratio of social workers to children, ensures that each foster parent and child receives a high level of support and supervision.

Home From Home aims to create opportunities for our children to become valuable members of society through every means possible – individual treatment plans, therapeutic assistance, extra help with educational needs and the chance to expand their worldview through experiences they would otherwise not get. And most of all, by loving them just the way they are.

Home From Home has been in operation for 10 years and has grown from a handful of homes in Khayelitsha to 34 homes in different areas of Western Cape. Home From Home is largely funded by donors, local and international, and with their support we manage to raise approximately R7 million per annum which ensures all of our homes are funded and all foster parents and children receive ongoing support, supervision and social work services.

Wish List

Christmas is such a special time for the families and children from Home From Home. Like every family we love to celebrate this festive occasion with presents, delicious food, family outings and a special visit from Father Christmas. It brings such joy to the children’s faces to receive a personalised gift as well as attend our highly anticipated annual Christmas Party.

We are currently asking for donations for each of our 200 children to receive a Christmas gift to the value of R200. If you would like to purchase a gift yourself please get in touch with our head office to receive individual wish lists for each child.

We would also love to be able to give them the gift of extra food over the long Christmas holidays so any monetary donations or donations in terms of food are welcome.
